The expression red-letter-day means a very important day or a memorable day which one can never forget.


  • Peter got his first job on 1st June this year. It was truly a red-letter-day for him
  • The day I got admission to the engineering college was a red-letter-day for me



This expression originated from the practice of marking the dates of church festivals on calendars in red. We find the use of this term in older times in America. This term came to be used widely in 1549 when the first Book of Common Prayer included a calendar with holy days marked in red ink
